Nine of Cups: Embracing Holiday Abundance

The Nine of Cups. Always a welcomed card in any spread, encouraging wishes and miracles, it’s not a stretch to associate this card with Christmas. Keep an eye open for this card, as it can help specify when an event may happen.

A dimly lit scene featuring a string of multicolored Christmas lights, creating a warm and festive atmosphere.

It’s been suggested “…it’s a time of celebrations and enjoyment, remembering your favourite things… and sort of reminds me of the night before Christmas, with all the stockings hung up by the chimney with care, in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there, children are sleeping, snug in their beds, while visions of sugar plums dance in their heads…” [1]

Another suggestion is the card “is rich with emotional gifts, but it’s about sharing those, spreading it around from the sheer joy it brings… It’s basically the night before Christmas…” [2]

Be Specific!
Take a risk and pin point a specific time (Christmas) & atmosphere

According to Tarot Verbatim: Nine of Cups + Ace of Cups + 3 of Cups
“So we are celebrating Christmas together in the happiest way.” [3]

If faced with the following two card combination: Six of Pentacles reversed + Nine of Cups, you may be spending too much during the holiday season and is a warning to stick to your budget.

Why The Nine of Cups?

“A sign of good times, the 9 of Cups indicates a period of contentment, abundance and happiness. Known as the “wish” card, whatever you wish for at this time makes its way to you. It doesn’t matter how your wishes are delivered to you, all that matters is that you trust that it is so and so it must be.” – Rosalind Medea

This quote perfectly sums up the atmosphere during the holiday season. Abundance in the gifts and holiday cheer we exchange. The inner knowing and trust in your beliefs whether you associate that with children believing in Santa or you hoping for a special occasion or offering. New year’s resolutions is building on that inner trust because you are making a promise to yourself.

Christmas Tree Symbolism In Tarot Cards

According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, the modern Christmas tree… originated in western Germany. The main prop of a popular medieval play about Adam and Eve was a Paradise Tree, a fir tree hung with apples, that represented the Garden of Eden. The Germans set up a paradise tree in their homes on December 24, the religious feast day of Adam and Eve. The Germans added communion wafers and apples to the earliest Christmas trees, representing the contrast of redemption and sin.

One of the earliest Christmas tree images comes from an 1831 German book pictured above. The Christmas tree is explicitly contrasted with the Tree of Knowledge on the Wall. The Christmas tree is presented by an angel. It is the combined tree of the Knowledge and Life.

There are two varieties of Trees commonly found across Tarot Decks – Tree of knowledge and The Tree of Life. If we consider the tradition of Christmas trees representing the polarity of redemption and sin, it is interesting to take note of trees images in the tarot cards this time of year. Traditionally, the following cards have depictions of trees: Two of Wands, The Hanged Man, The Lovers and the Four of Cups to name a few. Remember to look out for cards that represent the Kabbalah Tree of Life itself such as the High Priestess and add some Christmas to your reading this time of the year.
