Exploring Cartomancy: Tarot vs. Playing Cards

An artistic illustration depicting playing cards, including spades and hearts, interacting in a whimsical landscape with characters and abstract shapes representing cartomancy.

Forms of cartomancy appeared soon after playing cards were first introduced to Europe in the 14th century. Using standard playing cards was the most popular form of providing fortune-telling card readings in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.*

Using Tarot Cards & Playing Cards Together

In English-speaking countries, the most common form of cartomancy is generally tarot card reading. Tarot cards include the Major Arcana cards offering more insight to outside influences. The suits in the playing cards match those in tarot cards. I’ll consult them near the end of a reading to see if certain messages are reinforced, especially when it comes to “characters”.

In France, it was common to use a thirty-two card “piquet stripped deck” (otherwise known as a stripped deck or shortened pack). A piquet deck can be a fifty-two card deck with all of the twos through the sixes removed, keeping all of the sevens through the tens, the court cards, aces and joker). This gives more opportunity for the characters cards to show up and/or be strengthened.

The Joker & The Fool

Did you know the joker was introduced during the American Civil War as a Euchre trump card?* Obviously, when associating the tarot with the Joker card, it represents the Fool card. The Fool card was originally known as “The Alchemist”. It ultimately represents a new beginning. Although we are missing the other Higher Arcana cards, the Fool/Joker let’s us know if we will be dealing with something for some time to come or if a change of energies is coming in.
